Welcome to the Booker Line Website:![]()
The Booker Line Shipping Company, more commonly known simply as "Bookers", was founded in 1835 by three brothers from Lancashire to export sugar from their plantations
in Demerara back home to the refineries in the United Kingdom.
Despite losing ships to enemy action in
each of the two world wars, most notably the SS Arakaka in WW2, Booker Line continued to operate by use of chartered vessels, thereby maintaining an unbroken record of nearly 150 years continuous service.
Sadly, due to a decline in the British Merchant Navy and a change in market trends, Booker Line ceased trading, and in 1982 the ships were laid-up in Huskisson Dock and put up for sale; the last of the ships, the Booker Challenge, was sold in 1983.
Although Booker Line was a relatively small
shipping company, it had a proud, distinguished service record,
and the presence of its ships on the Liverpool waterfront, along
with
those of many other lines, is sadly missed. .
